Gamblin Cold Wax Medium 473ml

Mediums provide a way for artists to customise the texture and workability of their paint, and to alter the finish to be more matte or more glossy.

Cold Wax Medium is soft paste formulated to knife consistency. Gamblin Cold Wax Medium is made from naturally white unbleached beeswax, alkyd resin, and odourless mineral spirits, and is used to make oil colours thicker and more matte.

It can be thinned to brush consistency by dissolving it in a small amount of odourless mineral spirits.

The surface of paintings made with beeswax mediums will become only as hard as a beeswax candle.

Adding Gamblin Galkyd to Cold Wax Medium/oil colours mix will increase the sheen and flexibility of the paint film. Use a small amount to make Galkyd Mediums more matte. Cold Wax Medium contains no oil, so it can be applied as a wax varnish over a dry oil painting.

Experiment with different tools and techniques such as scraping, pushing, smearing and blending with Cold Wax Medium.

Handy hints:

• Recommended ratio is to add up to 1/3 Cold Wax Medium to 2/3 oil colour.

• Ensure your oil painting is thoroughly dry to the touch before applying.

• For a matte finish over your completed painting apply Gamblin Cold Wax Medium directly with a cotton cloth; no heating is required prior to use.

• Gently rub in small circular motions onto the painting.

• For a soft matt finish wait 4-6 hours then gently buff off the Gamblin Cold Wax Medium.

• Gamblin Cold Wax Medium is removable off paintings using Gamsol.

• Take two cotton cloths, one dry, the other soaked in Gamsol. Rub in circular motions onto the painting with the wet cloth then repeat with the dry one.

• Note: Gamblin Cold Wax Medium has a melting point of around 68 degrees Celsius so is stable in most environments.
