How to Create Textured Art

In this lesson, we'll show you how to make textured minimalist or abstract art with modelling paste.
Modelling paste is ideal for creating textured backgrounds on a wide range of surfaces. Once the paste has dried, layers can be added to increase the depth of the texture. It dries white and can be repainted with acrylic or oil paint.
For this tutorial, you will need the following:
- Modelling Paste (We used the Mont Marte Modelling Paste)
- Palette Knives
- Canvas
- Pattern Tools (Optional; we used the Mont Marte Clay Pattern Tool Set 4pc)
Piece 1:
We spread the modelling paste over the canvas for our first piece using palette knives.
Next, we worked the paste into the shape of a rake using clay texture tools.
In order to smooth out the paste, we also reached in with our hands.
After you're satisfied with the design, give it time to completely dry. If you wish to add some colour, you can then paint over it with acrylic paint.
Advice: Don't be scared to explore with various instruments, including your hands, to produce textures. You can always smooth it back out while it's still wet if you change your mind.
Piece 2:
Instead, I chose to use a circular palette knife to press into the paste to produce a pattern that resembles scales for this piece.
After you're satisfied with the design, give it time to completely dry. If you wish to add some colour, you can then paint over it with acrylic paint.
