Art Shed Partners with Bayley House Workskills Program to Build Real-World Retail Skills

In 2021, Art Shed proudly partnered with Bayley House on the popular renovation reality show The Block, where contestants had 90 minutes to shop in our store for supplies for a particular challenge. As part of this collaboration, we sponsored all the supplies for the Bayley House art room, sparking a community partnership that has continued to grow. Since then, we’ve strengthened our connection by participating in Bayley House’s Workskills Program, an initiative that helps people with disabilities gain hands-on experience and develop essential retail skills.

A Hands-On Experience in Retail

Through the Workskills Program, Bayley House participants join us every Friday for a 90-minute shift, experiencing the real-world operations of a retail environment. In Term 2, Carmelo and Emma completed their placements, and now Toby and Alex are continuing the program. By engaging in tasks like organizing displays, restocking shelves, and managing product placement, participants gain valuable retail experience that enhances both their practical skills and confidence.

Building Skills and Confidence in an Inclusive Workplace

Beyond learning retail basics, participants in the Bayley House Workskills Program have the opportunity to strengthen literacy skills by reading store signage and product labels, as well as develop teamwork abilities. Working alongside our supportive Art Shed team, participants gain confidence in communication, problem-solving, and retail operations—key skills that benefit them far beyond the workplace.

A Positive Experience for All Involved

The positive impact of this community partnership is felt by everyone at Art Shed. Team Leader Lenis shared, “I love the positivity they bring,” highlighting the enthusiasm and joy these participants bring to our store. We’re thrilled to provide an inclusive workplace that helps participants discover their potential, and we’re excited to see where their newfound retail skills will take them.

Looking Forward to More Partnerships with Bayley House

Thanks to the success and positive feedback from this partnership, Art Shed is excited to continue hosting placements with Bayley House, fostering skills, confidence, and community connections that last. Together, we’re building an inclusive workplace where people can thrive, learn, and achieve their goals.
